The Turning Movement Count (TMC) program was developed to automate the process of collecting and analyzing traffic volume data from an intersection of two streets. The intersection turning movement count requires a manual observer to record traffic movements. Such counts are typically taken throughout the busy weekday periods, with results summarized by either 15 or 60 minute periods. The entire process including data collection and analysis can be carried out by hand; however, the productivity of the traffic studies staff can be greatly enhanced through automation. The first step in the automation process was the development of a microcomputer-based intersection counter. This counter records push button actuations entered by an observer to represent the passage of individual vehicles. The traffic count information is stored by movement and period.

The program described in this manual produces turning movement count summaries and peak period analyses using data obtained directly from the IC 5000. Its capabilities includd reading the intersection counter, examining and editing the data, and printing of summary reports. The traffic volume data was also stored on a disk for later use in specialized analysis.
